I love to read stories to my three year old and it is always fun to read new ones to him and see how he responds. I was contacted by author Artie Bennett to review his latest book Poopendous! With a title like that I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pretty sure it would be funny. What was most interesting to me was that my little one was listening intently to me as I read the book to him. He tends to like books with rhyme and this book is packed with great rhymes that are so funny. I laughed out loud several times actually. Now my son is asking for the "poop book" at bedtime.
The story is all about poop of course with the main character, Professor Pip Poopdeck, introducing the many names and uses of poop. The illustrations are bright and colorful and will surely keep your little ones entertained and maybe even garner a few laughs from yourself.
Artie's previous title "The Butt Book" was the Winner of the Reuben Award for Book Illustration and named the Best Feel-Good Children’s Book by The Huffington Post. Artie Bennett is the executive copy editor for a children’s book publisher and he writes a little on the side (but not the backside!). His itch to write gave us The Dinosaur Joke Book: A Compendium of Pre-Hysteric Puns (currently extinct) when he was a much younger man. The Butt Book, however, was his first “mature” work.
Artie was the youngest (at about age thirteen) person to originate and sell a crossword
puzzle to the New York Times. He went on to sell several dailies and two large Sunday
puzzles to the Times before he began college. He and his wife, Leah, live deep in the bowels of Brooklyn, New York, where he spends his spare time moving his car to satisfy the rigorous demands of alternate-side-of-the-street parking.
Here is some praise about Poopendous!
“For anyone who loved The Butt Book, you must immediately go and buy Artie Bennett’s
follow-up, Poopendous! It appears there is no topic Mr. Bennett can’t make funny and
educational. There aren’t many picture books that teach kids that “Monkeys fling when
under stress. It helps the monkey decompress” and “Seeds inside a critter’s poop might
go as far as Guadeloupe!” I’m not kidding when I say this came in handy at my son’s
preschool last week.”
